Since perhaps the dawn of time, men and women have been using canes of various styles, made from those materials native to their local regions, as a means of support. Shepherds working in the fields long ago used specialized canes to work with their livestock and explorers chose rugged canes to help them in their quest to discover new lands, as well. It’s not hard to see the utility of a good walking cane, that are widely used as mobility aids by people with special needs and those who are visually impaired. However, walking canes and sticks are also used for folks who do not require such assistance in order to stay mobile.

In the hip hop world, entertainers such as 50 Cent have shot videos in which they’re twirling and otherwise showing off custom made canes that they use as part of their wardrobe. With hip hop being such an influential genre of music in youth culture, it’s not surprising that we would see a re-surge of cane popularity in other areas of pop culture entertainment, as well. In fact, the character Dr. Gregory House of the hit television show House MD is well known to audiences for his custom cane that features a flame design reminiscent of the paint jobs put on hot rods that are a big part of rockabilly culture.

Believe it or not, walking canes are definitely experiencing a Renaissance. Both men and women enjoy the playful aspects of incorporating walking sticks of all kinds into their fashion sense. Canes still offer a very unique visual element that could also very easily come in handy in various situations. Be it a formal event, a nordic walk, or a ladies-only tea party, there is a cane style and a cane type for each of these occasions.

Many people still wonder if a cane must be needed in order to be a proper inclusion in your wardrobe, but the fact is plenty of folks really do enjoy the extra comfort and support that a solidly made cane can offer them even if they don’t technically require that support to function. In fact, there are adjustable folding canes that provide support when you need it while still allowing you to transport them discretely during times when you don’t require them.

All in all, there are a wide array of canes available these days and if you use the internet to find one that works for you, you will find your options are quite vast.
